How to Install Google Chrome Extensions in Microsoft Edge

Thanks to Microsoft Edge using a Chromium-based browser, it’s finally possible to install Chrome extensions in Microsoft Edge. Now, you get the best of Chrome without actually having to use Chrome or yet another Google product.

How to Install Chrome Extensions on Edge

Before you start installing Chrome extensions, you have to enable third-party extensions in Edge. Open Edge and select the three-dot menu in the top right, then select Extensions. Or, click the Extensions icon (puzzle piece) next to the address bar. Click Manage extensions.

On the left side, toggle on Allow extensions from other sources. Click Allow if a warning appears. Click the Chrome Web Store link under Find new extensions. You can also directly visit the Chrome Web Store at any time.

Install Chrome extensions in Microsoft Edge the same way you would in Chrome. Select any extension you want, then click Get. Microsoft has verified some extensions. If it’s approved, you’ll also see a banner saying the extension works on Microsoft Edge, with a button that says Get extension. Either button will install the extension.

Read any permissions required, and click Add extension.

Click the Extensions icon (puzzle piece) next to the address bar, and select your new extension to open it. Click the three dots beside the extension, and select Show in toolbar to pin it to your toolbar.

Warning Before You Install Chrome Extensions in Microsoft Edge

Consider this your first warning: not all Google Chrome extensions have been tested in the Edge environment. What this means is that you may see memory leaks or a variety of other breakages. If you experience problems, try to uninstall the extensions one at a time until you find the cause.

The Chrome Web Store prompts you to use Chrome versus Edge. And, when you enable extensions from other stores, Edge warns you that they may not work properly. Some extensions may not install at all. If so, try to find similar Microsoft Edge extensions in the Edge store.

How to Uninstall Chrome Extensions in Edge

If an extension isn’t working, or you just don’t like it, uninstall it. Click the Extensions icon (puzzle piece) next to the address bar, or go to Settings -> Extensions. Click the three dots next to the extension you want to uninstall. Select Remove from Microsoft Edge.

If you don’t want to uninstall, but need to temporarily disable an extension, select Manage extension. Toggle the extension off. This leaves it installed and any custom settings intact. It’s a good way to save memory when you’re not actively using the extension for a while.
